More than 100 community members will tee off Sunday to benefit local children diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The Michael Hoefflin Foundation hosts its 10th annual Golf Classic starting at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia.

“(This event) enables us to continue the practical support that we provide to our families,” said Shawneen Rubay, the foundation’s director of events. “That could be anything from the care kits they receive in the hospital from first being diagnosed to ongoing practical support.”

The foundation was established in 1994 in honor of Michael Hoefflin, a local youth who had recurrent brain cancer.

Before cancer claimed his life, Michael played a key role in developing the nonprofit organization’s mission and establishing its goals, according to the foundation’s Web site.

The foundation is committed to funding research for cures and treatments, to spreading knowledge of childhood cancer, and to assisting local children and their families with emotional and financial support through outreach programs.

Rubay said the foundation currently serves more than 250 families with children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

The Golf Classic is the foundation’s second-biggest fundraiser and brings in as much as $55,000 each year, Rubay said.

A four-player scramble format will be used, and individual players will be grouped to form teams. Packages range from $50 to $1,400.

The $50 package includes entry into hole-in-one challenges and tournament contests such as golfing with marshmallows.

The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The foundation is still accepting entrants. The phone number is (661) 250-4100, or visit www.mhf.org.
