The annual Piru Creek cleanup is slated for Sunday morning.

The annual Piru Creek cleanup and picnic lunch/BBQ is Sunday, June 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting at Frenchman's Flat.

Sponsored by the Community Hiking Club, Friends of the River, the Santa Clarita Casting Club, and the Federation of Fly Fishers Southwest Council, the cleanup is designed to remove litter and other micro-trash from the creek and its banks.

"Piru Creek was given 'wild and scenic' status in our most recent wilderness bill, and since people camp and picnic there, sometimes it gets a little messy," said co-organizer Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel, who invites the community to participate.

"We'd love to see it all cleaned up again! We need your help. If you have the time, and would like to give back, we'd love to have your company!" she said.

Here's the itinerary for the day:

* 7:30 a.m. -- Meet at Towsley Canyon, outside the front gate to carpool to Frenchman's Flat
* 8 a.m. -- Arrive at Frenchman's Flat
* 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. -- Clean up the area around the campsites and river, and BUST DAMS!!
* 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. -- A toast to all of you and to our new Wild and Scenic River, and BBQ lunch
* 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. -- Short hike along the river and into the canyon, fly-casting lessons, a talk on stream ecology, swim and more.

To drive to Frenchman's Flat directly, take Interstate 5 north to Templin Hwy. Exit, turn left, go under the freeway and drive to the end of the road. Turn right at the crossroad and take it to the end. It will be blocked by a white Forest Service gate. Park there. It will take about 25 minutes to get to Frenchman's Flat from Valencia.

You will need an Adventure Pass.
