Former Mervyns store could be divided

Location would be ideal for three businesses

The former Valencia home of Mervyns remains one of the city's myriad vacant business properties, but Santa Clarita officials are hoping for some new life in the vast empty space.

Last month, city officials met with representatives from Developers Diversified Realty, which owns the 75,000-square-foot space, said Jason Crawford, the city's director of economic development.

In discussing possibilities for the property, he said subdivision was a well-received idea.

The location would be ideal for three businesses, he said, as it already has three entrances and sufficient parking.

Possible uses could include retail shops like Nordstrom Rack and a small grocery store along the lines of Trader Joe's, Crawford said.

He said city officials have been doing outreach to gauge interest among retailers, while the property owners are having engineers work out the feasibility of subdividing the building.

The Valencia Mervyns was shuttered late last year as the company reorganized itself after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in summer 2008.

Along with Target, Mervyns was one of the anchor tenants of the River Oaks Shopping Center.

Given the state of the economy, Crawford remains optimistic that the Magic Mountain Parkway location has a better chance at housing three smaller businesses rather than one large one.

"The big stores are holding out," he said.
