Hart is trying hard

To The Editor:

I couldn't agree more with Dave McEachern (April 15). We can do more for our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Indeed, we should have no tolerance for bullying and name-calling.

I would like to share the fact that we are doing exactly what he suggests with our new teachers. I serve as induction director for the Hart high school district's new teachers. For more than five years we have offered a heart-warming and heart-rending workshop entitled "Understanding the Hart Student."

We require every new teacher and counselor in our district to attend.

Peggy Stabile, former president of PFLAG, helped me five years ago to find a student from her organization to speak with new teachers.

However, this student is not alone in front of 100 new teachers. We also feature the voices of former Hart district students who were/are English language learners, learning-disabled, Asperger's and of minority races.

To add to the mix, we have recently invited Korean and Iraqi students to speak of their unique experiences in our district.

We do our best to assure students of a hate-free environment, knowing that it's the right and safest place for learning. And we'll keep trying harder, too.
