Jury in Castro trial continues to deliberate
The jury in the Esperanza Castro murder trial continued its deliberations in Dept. J of the San Fernando Superior Court Thursday.

If the final decision is not unanimous, the result will be a hung jury and Castro may be subject to a new murder trial. Castro was accused of killing her husband, Ramon Castro, on March 22, 2006. Ramon Castro's body was found the next day under a Highway 14 overpass on Sierra Highway.

Preliminary hearing set for Stephens
The preliminary hearing for Michael Dean Stephens, 18 - accused of murdering 20-year-old Joshua Pipho and attempting to murder 22-year-old Chad Weitz - is set for May 23rd in Dept. C of the San Fernando Superior Court, Judge Rick Brown said on Thursday. Family members from both sides attended Thursday morning's preliminary hearing.

E-waste disposal available on Saturday
A free e-waste recycling event is scheduled for Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at College of the Canyons' Valencia campus. Electronic items including TVs, computers, monitors and laptops will be accepted. The event will end once 500 items have been collected. Residential items only.

Fundraiser aims to help Edison House
The Questers and the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society are hosting an estate sale Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pardee House at Heritage Junction. The sale will include antiques, books and other items from the estate of a former Quester member. All proceeds will go toward completing the restor-ation and furnishing of the Edison House at Heritage Jun-ction. Heritage Junction is at 24101 Newhall Ave. (formerly San Fernando Road). Horse Shoe Ranch hike planned today
A two-mile evening hike through the back country of William S. Hart's "Horse Shoe Ranch" begins today at 7 p.m., county officials said.

Wildflowers, dramatic views and lots of wildlife are in store for hikers; a ranger will be along to identify native plants and animals.

Those interested should bring water, wear good boots and gather at Hart Hall at 7 p.m.

Acoustic folk/pop performance set
Local singer/songwriter Trish Lester will host an evening of acoustic folk and pop music tonight at Rattlesnake Slims, starting at 7 p.m. She will be joined by singer/songwriter Tome Renaud. Rattlesnake Slim's is at 23127 Lyons Ave.
