A man who apparently overdosed on drugs during a standoff with sheriff’s deputies last week at a Gorman motel has been jailed without bail and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife.

Franklin Grammer, 53, of Oklahoma, was arrested Monday morning following his release from a local hospital. He is being held in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles pending an extradition hearing, officials said.

The Johnson County, Kans. District Attorney’s office filed the charges Friday.

Grammer allegedly shot his estranged wife in the head outside of a house in suburban Fairway, Kans. last week, days after a judge denied her request for a court protective order.

On Thursday, police found Grammer at an Econo Lodge motel in the tiny town of Gorman. He held off sheriff’s deputies for nearly eight hours, threatening to hurt himself.

Sheriff’s deputies stormed his motel room after firing tear gas canisters inside and found a comatose Grammer on the bed. He was airlifted to a local hospital.

Police found two small, uninjured dogs and a gun in the room. The dogs were turned over to Grammer’s relatives.

The case has caused a stir in Fairway, a suburb of Kansas City, Kans., where police and a witness to the crime described the community as quiet and relatively safe.
