Fun for all at Castaic Sports Complex

Officials announce a parents’ night out summer program

The Castaic Sports Complex offers year-round activities for all ages, including Friday-night programming aimed at families.

The staff at the Castaic Sports Complex wants to redefine family time for many Santa Clarita Valley residents this summer.

It will do that by offering Friday-night programming aimed at families, said Jeff Dorst, Castaic Sports Complex recreation manager.

Friday nights from June 19 through the Sept. 4 will alternate between movie night for the whole family and parents' night out.

"I hope parents bring their kids out for movie night one week, then drop their kids off the following week so the parents can get some time for themselves," Dorst said.

Movie night features G-rated movies shown biweekly on Fridays from June 26 through Sept. 4.

On the Fridays when movies aren't being shown, parents can drop off their kids and give themselves some time off, Dorst said. Parents' night out begins June 19 and runs through Aug. 28.

"We offer the kids games and activities, while the parents can have time to go shopping, catch a movie, go to dinner or just rest," he said.

Parents need to sign up in advance for parents' night out. If the registration for a parents' night is less than six children, the program is canceled for that date, he added.

The cost is $10 per child.

Movies and inexpensive nights out for parents aren't the only action at the Castaic Sports Complex this summer.

The Sports Complex Youth Summer Day Camp runs from June 22 through July 31 for children ages 6 to 12.

Youth Summer Day Camp includes sports activities, team building, and arts and crafts.

"The goal is to help children building relationships with other people their age in order to develop social skills," Dorst said.

Youth Summer Day Camp is $60 each week.

The Sports Complex lives up to its name through many of the activities offered year-round, including its summer activities, Dorst said.

Youth basketball leagues games for children ages 5 to 15, begins July 11 and run through Aug. 15. Teams are forming and it isn't too late to be part of the action, Dorst said.

"The league plays on Saturday mornings and afternoons and this is a fun way to interact with other kids and get some exercise," he said. The cost is $45 per person.

Adults don't have to watch from the sidelines as the kids have all the fun, Dorst said. The adult basketball leagues start July 6 and run through Sept. 10.

"The men's leagues are broken into open, six-two-and-under and the over-30 league," he said.

The open league plays on Sunday and Thursday evening and anyone from 16 years of age and older can play, Dorst said.

The six-two-and-under league is for players six feet, two inches and under in height. Games are Monday and Wednesday nights.

The 30-and-older league is restricted to players over 30 years old. The 30-and-older league plays on Tuesday nights only.

"Us older guys can only play once a week," Dorst said.

The adult women's basketball league plays on Friday night.

Playground games may not be for everyone, so the Sports complex has other activities, such as its Jazzercise program.

"Jazzercise started in 2000 and is designed for men and women of all ages," Dorst said. The class runs on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

All the activities and programs offered at the Sports Complex add up to a place where the community can come together, Dorst said.

"This place creates a home away from home," he said. "I've met so many people who I call friends. The Sports Complex helps build community."
