Hot wildfire prep story

Thanks for your excellent story on wildfire preparedness ("Avoid the firestorm," The Signal, June 6).

You covered the steps individual homeowners can take to protect their property from wildfire.

There are also things people can do by joining at the community level to reduce and someday eliminate the threat of wildfires to homes.

Unlike other fire management challenges, the goal of reducing home losses to wildfire is one that can be addressed with relative technical ease. With better information for builders and homeowners, some changes in zoning laws and building codes, we could greatly reduce the scope of this problem.

There has been some excellent research on home ignitability; it just needs to be incorporated into codes. With science-based changes in zoning and building codes, we can learn to live with fire and end the fear of homes and communities damaged or destroyed by wildfire.
