A new development in Canyon Country will provide a new school for the Sulphur Springs School District.

The proposed Vista Canyon Ranch development will be responsible for construction on the property of the Pardee-built Spring Canyon project, district Superintendent Robert Nolet said.

The new elementary school, which remains unnamed, would be built by Vista Canyon Ranch LLC, he said.

"With Vista Canyon building that school, we give the Stonecrest and Shadow Pines area a neighborhood school," he said.

The district anticipates that the buildout of Vista Canyon will generate up to 350 elementary students.

Still, an opening date for the school remains in question.

"In today's economy, everything is very problematic," Nolet said.

If the economy and housing market turn around, the school would be completed in the next three to five years, Nolet said.
"That's very much a ballpark estimate," he added.

The Vista Canyon development, which has yet to receive city approval, is proposed to generate about 1,200 residential units, according to the agreement.

The project would be located east of the Santa Clara River and near Sulphur Springs Elementary School.

The Spring Canyon project is estimated to provide 542 homes, according to the agreement. It would be constructed at Highway 14 and Soledad Canyon Road, between Shadow Pines Boulevard and Agua Dulce Canyon Road.
