Red Cross honors heroes
The Red Cross is currently seeking nominations for SCV residents who have taken action in a time of crisis to help others in the past year and consistently show exemplary compassion. The American Red Cross will hold its annual "Hometown Heroes Recognition Breakfast" at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive, Valencia. All proceeds from the event will benefit Red Cross emergency response and educational services in Santa Clarita. Rancho Camulos offers tours
Docent led public tours are available without appointment February through November on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and year round by appointment. Rancho Camulos is a National Historic Landmark where the early California lifestyle is preserved in its original rural environment and was the setting for "Ramona," the 1884 novel by Helen Hunt Jackson that generated national interest in the history of Hispanic settlement in California and the impact on Native Americans. Suggested donation for the one hour tour is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. The Museum is located on Highway 126, 10 miles west of the I-5 freeway in Piru. Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital has the information you need - Henry Mayo's free Spine Education classes are held the second Wednesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Outpatient Therapy Services/Ambulatory Care Center, 25751 McBean Parkway, Suite 310. Start Smart class for teens at CHP
The Start Smart class is aimed at helping newly licensed drivers and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. Teens attend this class with their parent(s). The class is held at the Newhall Area California Highway Patrol Station, 28648 The Old Road, Valencia. Community hiking club June schedule
Today - An easy hike through lovely Whitney Canyon to the now dry waterfall. This is a 5.5 mile round trip route, with no gain. Meet at 8:15 a.m. for an 8:30 a.m. hike. Finished before lunch. Bring water and snacks. Meet at the green MRCA gate next to the Park and Ride at Newhall Avenue and Highway 14.
June 12-14 - Join wilderness advocates for an Eastern Sierra Campout at Obsidian Flats Group Campground near June Lake. Saturday night dinner and Sunday pancake breakfast will be provided. Other meals will be on your own. Bring own camping gear. Carpools may be arranged. Reservations required.
June 13 - East Canyon, Terry Morse will be leading a group up to the top of East Canyon. This is about 6 miles round trip with 1,000 ft. gain. It is a fairly easy trek, even on hot summer days. Dive into fitness with Aqua Fitness
Linda Bennett, fitness director of the SCV Seniors facility, teaches a Tuesday/Thursday session of Aqua Fitness at Bouquet Canyon Seniors facility, 26705 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus. Water Walking/warm-up begins at 8:30 a.m. The Active class runs from 8:45 a.m to 9:30 a.m. Students are asked to bring a towel, aqua shoes, sunscreen and bottled water. The cost is $5 per class for those over 60, and $6 per class for those under 60. Classes run through October. Care for your heart health fair
At Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's "Care for Your Heart" Community Health Fair, held from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 12, attendees have an opportunity to participate in free health screenings and receive valuable health care tips and information. Friends of the Libraries book sale
SCV Friends of the Libraries will host a summer book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the Valencia Library, 23743 W. Valencia Blvd., Valencia. ‘Stagecoach' at Friday Flickers
The Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will present John Ford's landmark 1939 Western film "Stagecoach" starring John Wayne at dusk (around 8 p.m.) Saturday, June 13. Gates open at 7 p.m. The film, which is part of the "Flickers at the Junction" film series, will be presented outdoors (weather permitting) at Heritage Junction, Newhall (inside William S. Hart Park) at 24107 Newhall Ave., Newhall. The suggested donation is $5, which includes free popcorn. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Sierra Pelona Rock Club picnic potluck
The Sierra Pelona Rock Club will meet 11 a.m. Sunday, June 14 at Valencia Meadows Park for the group's annual picnic potluck. Food, games and a White Elephant auction followed by Bingo. Pastel specialist to demo at SCAA
The Santa Clarita Artists' Association (SCAA) 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, meeting will feature Meli Calkins on the subject of soft pastels, demonstrating a seascape or landscape, in the community room between JC Penny and the Food Court. CTG summer theater workshops
Workshop programs are offered this summer for children ages 6 to 17 at the Canyon Theatre Guild, 24242 Main St. Newhall. Curriculum includes theater history, terminology, improvisation, audition and acting techniques, singing, dancing and working as a team. The two-week Canyon Theater Guild Kids for children ages 6-10 will meet every day from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 15, June 29, and July 13. Tuition is $299 + $25 registration fee. The three-week Canyon Theater Guild Juniors for children ages 10-13 will meet every day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 15 and July 6. Tuition is $399 + $25 registration fee. Prevent sexual harassment
Sexual Harassment Prevention Training will be held Thursday, June 18. Local chapter of the Professionals in Human Resources Association presents a two-hour course designed to meet the California requirement that all supervisors are trained in sexual harassment prevention techniques. Registration is $65 for individuals or $50 for three or more employees from the same company. Donate blood at Newhall Memorial
Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's blood drive will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 18. The 12-hour blood drive will be held in the Henry Mayo/COC Clinical Education Center on the hospital's campus, 25727 McBean Parkway, Valencia. Giving blood is simple, painless, and it takes less than one hour. Any healthy person age 17 or older and weighing at least 110 pounds, and who has not donated blood in the last 8 weeks, may be able to donate blood. Donors can register on-line at www.henrymayo.com, call (661) 253-8888 for an appointment, or show up between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donors are requested to bring a valid photo I.D. and eat a nutritious meal prior to donating.

Authors discuss San Fernando Mission
