A driver was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Valencia for allegedly throwing a metal bolt at disabled children during the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a sheriff's official said.

David Schwartz pulled his car alongside Torch Run participants, which included sheriff's deputies and a group of disabled children, as the runners entered the intersection of McBean Parkway and Arroyo Park Drive in Valencia, said Sgt. Ron Price of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

The Torch Run is an annual fund-raiser for the Special Olympics.

Schwartz, 41, of Newhall, allegedly yelled sexually explicit language at the participants as they ran on McBean Parkway, Price said. He allegedly hurled a metal bolt toward the children, barely missing two of them, Price said.

The suspect then sped off and was pursued by sheriff's deputies, who arrested Schwartz blocks away from the incident.

Schwartz was booked on one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon with a hate-crime enhancement. He is being held at the Sheriff's Station on $50,000 bail.
