Red Cross honors heroes
The Red Cross is currently seeking nominations for SCV residents who have taken action in a time of crisis to help others in the past year and consistently show exemplary compassion. The American Red Cross will hold its annual "Hometown Heroes Recognition Breakfast" at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, 24500 Town Center Drive, Valencia. All proceeds from the event will benefit Red Cross emergency response and educational services in Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita Silvertone Singers

Rancho Camulos offers tours
Docent led public tours are available without appointment February through November on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and year round by appointment. Rancho Camulos is a National Historic Landmark where the early California lifestyle is preserved in its original rural environment and was the setting for "Ramona," the 1884 novel by Helen Hunt Jackson that generated national interest in the history of Hispanic settlement in California and the impact on Native Americans. Suggested donation for the one hour tour is $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. The Museum is located on Highway 126, 10 miles west of the I-5 freeway in Piru. Docents needed at Rancho Camulos
Become a part of where the history, myth and romance of Old California still linger. Lead tours or volunteer to assist with other museum activities depending on your interests and availability. Start Smart class for teens at CHP

The Start Smart class is aimed at helping newly licensed drivers and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. Teens attend this class with their parent(s).

The class is held at the Newhall Area California Highway Patrol Station, 28648 The Old Road, Valencia.  Classes wil be held June 23, July 23, Aug. 18 and Sept. 22. Attendees need to RSVP (661)294-5540 and provide  name, parent name and daytime telephone number.

Farmer's Market at COC parking lot

‘Toastmaster' public speaking group

Soccer sign-ups end today
Registration for the upcoming fall AYSO soccer season will end today for the Santa Clarita Valley. There are a series of walk-in registrations at local schools, though one can also be registered online. AYSO Region 678 is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization that provides age-specific soccer programs for children from age 5 to 18. Parent-volunteers welcome. Info: www.ayso678.com.

Special Olympics at GU in Valencia
Special needs athletes from throughout Southern California will converge upon Gymnastics Unlimited in Valencia at 10 a.m. today, as the local gym and the Santa Clarita Valley chapter of the Special Olympics host the gymnastics competition of the region's Special Olympics summer games. SCV Off the Grid meets at Saturn

Dive into fitness with aqua fitness
Linda Bennett, fitness director of the SCV Seniors facility, will teach a Tuesday/Thursday session of Aqua Fitness at Bouquet Canyon Seniors facility, 26705 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus beginning Tuesday, June 2. Water Walking/warm-up begins at 8:30 a.m. The Active class runs from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Students are asked to bring a towel, aqua shoes, sunscreen and bottled water. The cost is $5 per class for those over 60, and $6 per class for those under 60. Classes run through October. Art and jewelry boutique June 4
The Santa Clarita Artists' Association and Artistic Smiles Family Dentist & Orthodontist will host a public reception with an art and jewelry boutique from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 4. Affordable art and jewelry will be displayed for purchase as well as the art hanging on the walls of the corridor and dental rooms. Refreshments will be served. SCAA Members, Jackie Sofen and Peggy Patti will display miniature paintings in frames. Jaylene Armstrong will showcase her jewelry. Fiesta Poker tourny fun at Westridge
The Soroptomist International of Santa Clarita Valley’s Fiesta Poker Tournament will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, June 6. Evening of poker, celebrities, prizes, plus festive food and beverages. Guests will have the opportunity to play for prizes and top honors in a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament alongside celebrities and professional poker players. Buy in is $100, with three rebuys at $40 each, and a final add on of $60.

‘Stagecoach’ at Friday Flickers
The Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will present John Ford’s landmark 1939 Western film “Stagecoach” starring John Wayne at dusk (around 8 p.m.) Saturday, June 13. Gates open at 7 p.m. The film, which is part of the “Flickers at the Junction” film series, will be presented outdoors (weather permitting) at Heritage Junction, Newhall (inside William S. Hart Park) at 24107 Newhall Ave., Newhall.

The suggested donation is $5, which includes free popcorn. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Friends of the Libraries book sale
SCV Friends of the Libraries will host a summer book sale  9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the Valencia Library, 23743 W. Valencia Blvd., Valencia. A members only pre-sale will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 12. Funds raised will benefit the libraries of the SCV. Donations accepted at SCV libraries but no magazines or encyclopedias.
