The unity of the Canyon High School class of 2009 rippled through its Tuesday night graduation ceremony.

“We’re like a family. We’re always pulling for each other,” said Alex McCaslin, a member of Canyon’s class of 2009.

That unity was no more evident than during the national anthem at the Tuesday night graduation held at College of the Canyons Cougar Stadium.

Canyon High School’s Senior Members of Choral Music was singing the National Anthem when the microphone shorted.

As if on cue, Canyon High’s graduating class sang louder, filling the stadium with song.

“Everyone in this class is there for each other,” McCaslin said about the singing.

Faculty, family and friends saluted the close to 600 graduates of Canyon High School Tuesday night. As the graduates bounced beach balls to the crowds delight, class of 2009 graduate, Alexandra Vatchkova, told her fellow graduates to pursue happiness in their lives.

“Pursue happiness not prestige,” she said. “Searching for happiness means trusting yourself to make the best choice.”

Class of 2009 graduate Leland Lewit told his classmates of the challenges they will face in the future. He encouraged them to remain positive in the face of challenges.

“Today’s world is challenging and sometimes scary,” he said. “But if we focus on positive things we can achieve anything.”

Canyon High Principal Bob Messina left the graduating class with a bit of sagely advice. “Make peace with your mistakes,” he said.

“Mistakes are how you learn.”
