County antes up for Elsmere Canyon land

Los Angeles County has contributed $1 million from a trust fund toward the purchase of an additional 800 acres of land in Elsmere Canyon.

When purchased, the 800 acres in Elsmere Canyon will be dedicated open space, said Los Angeles County Fifth District Supervisor Michael Antonovich in a statement released Tuesday.

The Sunshine Canyon Landfill Benefit Trust Fund was started by Antonovich to offset the impacts from dumping trash in the Sunshine Canyon Landfill. As trash is deposited into the landfill, the trash hauler pays fees to the County, some of which goes toward the trust fund.

The county, the cities of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles, along with the Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority, are trying to raise $9.5 million to purchase the property.
