Three people were injured and traffic slowed to a crawl for more than an hour Tuesday when a one car collided with another and flipped over on southbound Interstate 5, CHP Officer Michelle Esposito said.

About 9:15 a.m., the driver of a Honda Civic lost control near the Balboa Boulevard exit in the Newhall Pass, Esposito said. The fishtailing Civic broadsided a Jeep Liberty and then overturned, she said.

The overturned Civic briefly trapped one of its occupants and the Liberty crashed into a retaining wall on the right side of the freeway.

The Civic's driver - Hasmik Toufenkchian, 56, of Canyon Country - and her passenger suffered moderate cuts to their heads and arms. Emergency crews took the two to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. The driver of the Liberty, Brenda Pierce, 41, of Agua Dulce, complained of pain and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

California Highway Patrol officers shut down two lanes of the Santa Clarita Valley artery for about an hour for the rescue and cleanup, causing heavy traffic that stretched from the site of the accident, at about the Balboa Boulevard exit, back over the Newhall Pass and almost to the Calgrove on-ramp, about five miles north.
