Independence Day is just about a month away, so there must be a parade coming. Of course there is.

The Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade has been a fixture in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1933, and once again this year, organizers are pulling out all the stops.

Organizers have chosen Six Flags Magic Mountain’s park president to be the grand marshall.

Jay Thomas was selected as the embodiment of this year’s theme: Fun in the SCV, said parade Chairman Leon Worden, a former Signal editor.

Thomas said he’s looking forward to the parade, and plans to bring along several amusement park mascots for the ride.

“It’s a huge honor,” Thomas said. “My wife and I are relatively new to the community. We have lived all over the U.S. ... I’ll tell you, we’ve never been so blessed in such a loving and caring community than we are in Santa Clarita.”

Thomas, who began his amusement park career in 1988 as a ride operator in Texas, has been park president at Magic Mountain since Fall 2007. He moved to the SCV with his wife and three children.

“It’s the one place the entire community can shine a spotlight on itself,” Worden said. “It’s what Old Town Newhall is all about.”

Worden extended his thanks to the Greater SCV Optimist Club, which he said will provide registration on the morning of the parade and serve as marshalls, effectively running the event on the ground.

The entry deadline for the Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade is just a couple of weeks away. Entry forms are available at the parade’s Web site or at The Signal’s offices at 24000 Creekside Road in Valencia.
