Sharon Lee was one of 601 graduates receiving their diplomas Friday evening at Cougar Stadium as West Ranch High School celebrated the graduation of the class of 2009.

High school graduations are a time of reflection for more than just the graduates themselves. The parents and family members of the graduates also take time to reflect, as was the case at West Ranch High School's graduation Friday.

West Ranch High School honored its 601 graduates at College of the Canyons on Friday night. Family members and friends sat under the lights at the College of the Canyons Cougar Stadium cheering the candidates and acknowledging the long road that lead to Friday's graduation.

"It's a real sense of accomplishment as a parent to watch your child graduate high school," said Laurel Schmidt, mother of Elizabeth Schmidt, a 2009 West Ranch High School graduate.

For some family members, high school graduation marks the beginning of the journey.

"Now is where it all starts." said Joe Moulton, father of Matt Moulton, a 2009 West Ranch High School graduate. "It's time to grow up and put all the things you learned to use."

Graduating senior MacKenzie Svastics delivered the graduation address where he recapped the 2009 graduating class' journey through high school.

"Finally we find ourselves at the end wondering how the four years went by so fast," he said.

While the past four years may have flown by, Friday night was also a time for some parents to look to their kids futures and celebrate.

Leroy Parker beamed with pride about his daughter Lauren Jones, a 2009 West Ranch High School graduate. "I'm very proud of her and excited to see her grow," he said. Jones is headed to Howard University to study political science.

Parker said Friday night was the culmination of his daughter's hard work and determination. "She understands what it takes to be successful," Parker said. "She (Lauren) gets it."

When the last name was read from graduation roll, West Ranch High School Principal Bob Vincent congratulated the class of 2009 and told them to rotate the tassels on their caps to the left signifying their graduation. He then dismissed the graduates for the final time.

The caps flew and family and friends swarmed the football field.

The graduates themselves were overwhelmed with joy and looking forward to the road ahead.

"I can't wait for the future and what it may hold," said Brian Jensen, 2009 West Ranch High School graduate.

"I'm very excited and looking forward to starting my new life," said Jessica Sanchez, a 2009 West Ranch High School graduate.
