Fair share of taxes OK

I am a progressive Democrat who voted no on most of the propositions on the May 19 ballot, but it was not because I am tired of being taxed to death as Lynn Vakay says in her “Coming together to stop the props” Opinion column (The Signal, May 15).

Paying taxes ensures funding for public services that are important to me, like education, early childhood intervention programs and services for the elderly and disabled.

Paying for these services saves me money because then I will not have to pay for more expensive services such as hospitalization and nursing homes for the elderly and disabled or jails and institutions for people who did not receive the public services they needed.

I voted against Proposition 1A because it destroys services I think we, as a society need. I voted against Proposition 1D and 1E because they would have allowed the tobacco industry to destroy the First Five program and the Mental Health Services Act.

Vakay, please do not include me with you and other Republicans and Libertarians who do not want to pay your fair share of taxes for living in California.
