Valencia High School honored its more than 500 graduates Thursday evening during the 2009 graduation ceremony at College of the Canyons.

As the class of 2009 filed past the two rows of Valencia High School faculty on the football field, shouts and cheers crowded the field as families in the stands waved signs and balloons and aimed their cameras to the graduates dressed in purple and gold caps and gowns below.

As the sun set, a series of speakers and singers took the stage to praise the graduates.

Shaina Levin, senior class vocalist, sang “I’m Not Gonna Cry,” by Corey Smith, while the Valencia senior choir performed “Irish Blessing,” by Graeme Langager, to the sounds of cheers and applause from the eager graduates.

Principal Paul Priesz reflected on the time the students spent at Valencia High School.

“The last four years have been very productive,” Priesz said. “This was a great class. I am grateful to all of you.”

He took time to thank the students for their dedication.

“You have helped bring recognition to Valencia High School,” he told the graduates. “I wish for you a great future.”

Amy Moore, senior class speaker, took the podium and reflected on her years as a high school student.

“We have accomplished so much since we arrived at Valencia High School,” Moore said.

As she praised her classmates, Moore encouraged the class of 2009 to continue learning beyond their high school years.

Senior class speakers Blake Pinsker and David Stroud shared a speech, highlighting the challenges and triumphs throughout their high school career.

“Congratulations class of 2009 and thank you for everything you have done and given me,” the two said.

Also during the ceremony, 2009 Class President Brian Ceppi and 2009 Valedictorian Su Yeun Kim passed on the Viking Torch of Learning to the 2010 Class President Megan Hayes and 2010 First Scholar Jee Heum Jung, offering support to the future graduates.

Senior David Dunkel presented the Flame of Inspiration to English teacher Joseph Marcucilli for his dedication to teaching and leading Valencia’s students.
