The talk of the Foothill League at the beginning of the year was Valencia’s vulnerability.

The Vikings graduated a ton of talent, and given the improvement of other teams, it seemed like their 72-game winning streak was in danger.

Valencia responded by winning its ninth consecutive Foothill League title, with one of the holdovers from 2008’s national championship team leading the way.

Senior middle blocker John Souisa was named the 2009 Foothill League Player of the Year by the coaches in honor of his efforts.

Souisa provided powerful kills and a steadying force in the middle for the Vikings, who extended their league winning streak to 82 straight games with a spotless 10-0 record.

A pair of Valencia juniors made the first team, including middle blocker Josh Duarte and libero Nick Ferry. Duarte used his 6-foot-6-inch frame to execute blocks and kills, while Ferry provided digs and passing while ranging around the court.

Canyon landed a pair of first-teamers after rallying to finish second in the league standings. Senior co-captain Matt Veiga gave the Cowboys a powerful force at the net and often led the team in kills, while fellow senior co-captain Alex Reeves provided Canyon with excellent passing.

Saugus was last in the league in 2008, but the Centurions rebounded to clinch third and were rewarded with two first-teamers. Senior Kyle Eaton hammered kills all season long for Saugus up front, while junior captain Ryan Mason set up a lot of those kills by leading the Centurions in passing.

Hart sophomore J.J. Mosolf was the other first-team selection, providing the Indians with a diverse skill set and a reliable blocker at the net.

West Ranch senior setter Jeff Zepp made the second team after helping the Wildcats with his kills, assists and experience.

Canyon had two second-teamers, including senior Michael Edwards and junior Curtis VanGrinsven. Saugus junior Sean Picard and freshman Colby Wilson also made the second team, along with Valencia outside hitter Broc Oppler and Hart junior Andrew Uberstine.

Golden Valley senior Mikael Hounanian earned an honorable mention, as did Valencia senior Mitchell Morris, Saugus senior Matt Romero, West Ranch junior Wes Bowen, Canyon sophomore Kevin Hancock, and Hart sophomore Taylor Gregory.
