Hello, Santa Clarita Valley! Welcome to The-Signal.com's Daybreak, your point of entry for the day, and a quick journey through the past, present and future. Let the adventure begin:

First Word
"A village is a form of government, and a government that doesn’t follow God’s precepts of love, tolerance and forgiveness wreak havoc on a much grander scale than any one person could ever do." - Scott Thomas Wilk, Right Here, Right Now (click here for column)

Today is Friday, May 29, the 149th day of 2009. There are 216 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On May 29, 1953, Mount Everest was conquered as Edmund Hillary, of New Zealand, and Tensing Norgay, of Nepal, became the first climbers to reach the summit.

Ten years ago: The space shuttle Discovery completed the first-ever docking with the international space station. Olusegun Obasanjo became Nigeria’s first civilian president in 15 years, ending a string of military regimes.

Watercooler Talk
ALOHA, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man spent Memorial Day in jail after calling 911 to complain that a McDonald’s worker was rude and didn’t give him an orange juice he ordered. Sheriff’s Sgt. David Thompson said the man, 20, wouldn’t listen when deputies told him the emergency number isn’t to be used for straightening out fast-food orders.

A McDonald’s employee also called 911 during the incident, complaining that the man and the people with him were blocking the drive-thru lane and knocking on the restaurant windows.

The man was accused of improper use of 911. The Oregonian newspaper reported that the man was bailed out of the Washington County Jail on Tuesday and could not be reached for comment.

Corrections
A story about Casden Properties’ plans for property at Railroad Avenue and 13th Street contained an error. Casden is only proposing residential development on its 95 acres. The rest of the North Newhall Specific Plan area could accommodate 473,000 square-feet of commercial space. (“Newhall plan gains steam,” May 25)

A headline in The Signal should have read, “Obama speaks at Navy graduation.” (“Obama speaks at Marine graduation,” May 24)
The Signal regrets these errors.
