Coroner’s investigators identified an 85-year-old man Thursday who was found dead after he drove his car off of Vasquez Canyon Road Wednesday afternoon, plummeting approximately 200 feet into a ravine.

The dead man, Jimmy Giancanelli, was a longtime resident of Santa Clarita, a relative said.

A witness told The Signal she saw Giancanelli’s car cross over a lane, hit a bump and roll down the hill, coming to rest upside down.

Coroner’s officials are still trying to determine the cause of Giancanelli’s death and whether he died before the crash or as a result of the impact, said Coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.
