There was no stopping Christian Lopes this season.

The Valencia shortstop and leadoff hitter crushed 15 home runs, launched 28 extra-base hits and drove in 33 runs while scoring 39 himself.

The 15 home runs are a Foothill League and Santa Clarita Valley record.

Those numbers led the Vikings to a Foothill League championship, and Lopes’ play led to his selection as the 2009 Foothill League Player of the Year by the coaches.

Just a sophomore, Lopes hit .453, drew 24 walks and had a slugging percentage of 1.140, giving Valencia some serious power at the top of the lineup.

Three of Lopes’ teammates made the first team. Senior Dylan Jones had 36 hits, 27 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Valencia junior Scotland McKenzie hit .435 with 30 RBIs and seven home runs, while freshman Trey Williams burst onto the Foothill League scene with a .429 average and five home runs.

League runner-up West Ranch also had three first-teamers.

Senior pitcher Trevor Fredrickson led the league with a 1.10 ERA, 83 strikeouts and nine wins, while senior Casey Watkins drove in a league-best 45 RBIs. Senior Cal Vogelsang had a good all-around season with 38 hits, 35 runs, 32 RBIs and eight homers.

Saugus finished third in the standings and had two first-team selections.

Senior shortstop Zach Vincej and senior second baseman Brett Piper formed the league’s best defensive tandem, and Vincej hit .369 with 21 RBIs and 22 runs. Piper finished with 34 hits and 21 RBIs.

Hart had three first-teamers after finishing fourth in the league. Senior Spenser Souza tied for second in home runs with nine, and he had 23 RBIs and stole 11 bases.

Fellow seniors Devin Rodriguez and Trevor Brown also made the first team. Rodriguez hit .402 with 34 RBIs, 14 doubles and eight home runs, while Brown batted .429 with 39 hits and struck out 39 batters as a pitcher.

West Ranch had three selections on the second team, including senior Jake Bernards, who led the league in batting average at .482 and on-base percentage at .602. Senior Mitchell Thompson had 37 RBIs, and junior Allen Sarkissian also made the second team.

Golden Valley had two second-teamers after finishing fifth. Senior ace Nick Rhoades struck out 42 batters and also had five doubles and a home run, while junior Kamran Young hit .324 with 22 hits and 14 RBIs.

Saugus landed three second-teamers in seniors Kyle Hooper and Stefan Cordes and sophomore Nick Lombardi, while Valencia sophomores Quincy Quintero and Nick Rivas also made the second team.

Hart junior Pat Valaika was the Indians’ lone second-team selection.

Canyon senior Donnie Young was an Honorable Mention after the Cowboys finished last in the Foothill League. Young batted .342 with 25 hits and 12 RBIs.

Golden Valley senior Jordan Yallen was also an Honorable Mention, as was Valencia senior Dominick Solley. Hart junior Nolan Simon, Saugus junior Tommy Kister and West Ranch junior Nico Rusconi.
