Valencia softball loses in round two of Division I playoffs

Possibly the best run in Santa Clarita Valley softball history ended Tuesday in Riverside.

Valencia, winners of the last two CIF-Southern Section Division I titles, lost 4-2 to Riverside Poly (23-8) in the second round of this year’s Division I playoffs.

“You never want it to end,” said Vikings head coach Donna Lee. “We played the kind of softball we (usually) play, we beat them. You have to have that sense of urgency every inning.”

Valencia freshman pitcher Carly Mortensen went the distance, striking out six batters and surrendering only four hits.

The four runs she gave up, one in the third inning and three more in the sixth, were all unearned.

The Vikings (25-7) made four errors in the game and Lee said her team made more mental errors.

Valencia, though, mounted a late comeback in the top of the seventh inning.

Senior catcher Amy Moore led off the seventh with a single.

She moved to third on a double by Lindsay Clark.

Moore and Clark would later score on a single from Megan Foglesong, cutting Poly’s lead to 4-2.

The rally ended there.

Moore and Foglesong each had two hits.

The Vikings were selected as national champions in 2007 after winning a Division I title, then proved doubters wrong by winning another Division I title in 2008.

For the second season in a row, Valencia lost the state’s player of the year.

“This was definitely a rebuilding year for us,” Lee said. “We weren’t even expected to win the Foothill League title.”

But they did.

There were only two seniors on the 2009 Vikings roster.

Lee has high hopes for 2010.

“We’re going to have some pretty lofty goals,” she said.
