I-5 collision backs traffic for hours
A Friday morning traffic collision on the southbound side of Interstate 5 snarled traffic for hours.

At around 6:50 a.m., the driver of a big rig just north of McBean Parkway exit veered to the left, crossing all lanes and collided with a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer, according to Officer Michelle Esposito at the California Highway Patrol's Newhall area office.

The impact caused the Trailblazer to spin around while the big rig crossed into the northbound side of traffic, blocking two of the lanes, Esposito said.

Southbound lanes were closed for approximately three hours, backing traffic up to the Calgrove Boulevard exit, according to Esposito.

No injuries were reported.

Castro defense rests, closing arguments Monday
The defense has rested in the case of People vs. Esperanza Castro, which has been ongoing since March 3 at the Superior Court in San Fernando.

Castro is accused of murdering her husband Ramon on March 22, 2006, in the bedroom of the couple's Canyon Country home, then dumping his body in the bed of his pickup truck and leaving it along Sierra Highway.

Deputy District Attorney Paula Gonzales and defense attorney Peter Korn are currently working on jury instructions. Closing arguments are set to begin on Monday.
