Arturo Ramos, of Downtown Los Angeles, prepares lunch for his family and friends as they spend Memorial Day at Castaic Lake on Monday afternoon. Expected attendance for the holiday was between seven and eight thousand people.

Up to 8,000 people flocked to Castaic Lake on Memorial Day to relax by the water, set up picnics and fire up the barbecue.
"The plan is to have fun," said Isai Chavez of Santa Paula.

Chavez was at the lake with his loved ones for some "good quality family time."

His father-in-law, Rev. Elias Arce of Los Angeles, reflected on the significance of the Memorial Day holiday.

"It is a time for our nation to reflect and be thankful for the lives of those who have rendered their services in foreign lands," he said.

David and Nancy Butch of Lancaster spent Monday afternoon lounging under a beach umbrella beside the lake.

Nancy Butch said the holiday marks a moment to remember those who have served the country.

For her husband David, Monday was a day to relax and spend time with the family.

"It's just a day off from work," he said.

Monday's sunny skies brought between 7,000 to 8,000 people to the lower lake, a figure in line with previous years, said Joe Walsh, Castaic Lake aquatics manager.

People were drawn to Castaic Lake for the swimming, boating and "everything that Castaic has to offer," he said.

Memorial Day is typically a busy holiday for the lake, along with the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

"Those are the big three days," Walsh said.
