Obamas should have adopted

Regarding Michelle Sathe's Opinion column "Doggone disappointing" (The Signal, April 19):

Thanks to Michelle Sathe for her excellent essay on why the Obamas should have adopted a dog from an animal shelter rather than accepting one from a breeder. (Ted Kennedy bought the dog from a breeder, and then gave it as a gift to the Obamas).

The Humane Society estimates that, on a national level, half of all animals in shelters are killed every year - not because they wouldn't make great pets, but because there are not enough people able or willing to give these animals a home.

I truly believe that it should be illegal to breed dogs until all the dogs in animal shelters have been adopted.

Please adopt your dogs from animal shelters or animal rescue groups. Do not buy from pet stores or private breeders.

Pet stores buy from dog brokers like the giant Hunte Corporation in Missouri, which buys all its dogs from puppy mills.

At puppy mills breeding dogs are kept for their entire lives in cages, in poor, often dirty conditions and with little veterinary care.

Food and water are given stingily.

During the many years of being impregnated, or doing the impregnating, over and over until their bodies give out, these dogs rarely if ever get a kind word or a gentle touch.

After years of physical and social deprivation, a few puppy mill dogs get rescued (such as when a puppy mill is forced to shut down by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which sets minimal standards of care) and live out their remaining years in loving homes.
