Saugus softball lost 5-0 to Thousand Oaks in Thousand Oaks Thursday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs.

The Centurions managed just two hits in the game.

Alexis Tellez and Sara Shier each went 1-for-3 for Saugus (13-17) against Lancers pitcher Taylor Yamek.

“They actually played really good defense,” said Saugus head coach Julie Watson of Thousand Oaks. “We hit the ball hard but right at people.”

Watson said it might have been a different game had it the Centurions not made so many mental mistakes.

Saugus made only one error, but a lack of communication cost the team.

Centurions pitcher Kimmie Lockhart surrendered three runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth.

Yet Thousand Oaks (23-5) managed only six hits in the game.

Kelsey Christopherson pitched the last 1 2/3 innings for Saugus, keeping the Lancers off the board the rest of the way.

Watson pointed to inexperience as another downfall Thursday, but at the same time pointed to it as a positive.

Saugus will lose only two seniors from this team, including Tellez.
