The California Flyers cheer team competes at the Cheersport Nationals in Atlanta.

On Feb. 16-17, 20 Santa Clarita athletes ages 11 to 18 found themselves on a stage in Atlanta, competing in the Cheersport Nationals. More than 30,000 cheerleaders attended, more than 40 states were represented, and all were ready to take on the best teams in the nation.

This was the California Flyers first experience at the Cheersport Nationals.

Coach and choreographer Shelly Gramatky said, "We are going for the experience, to feel what it's like to be surrounded by the most acrobatic athletes and teams in cheerleading. We are traveling this far to do our best and bring back with us motivation for our program to grow and excel."

There is a definite draw to this competition, which is why most teams travel far and wide to compete here. Cheersport offers bids to the Cheerleading Worlds Competition held in Orlando Florida at the end of April.
Only those who earn a bid to attend may compete at the most prestigious cheerleading competition in the world.

California Flyers dreamed of receiving a bid, but knew it was just that - a dream. "Our goal is to have fun and remember this trip as being the first," coach Gramatky said.

California Flyers - Top Gun Small Senior (level 5) team did just that.

The weekend was fun and exciting, and will always be memorable in every family and team member's mind. They not only performed a flawless two and a half minute action-packed routine, they captured the first place title, trophy, banner, jacket and a $7,500 check to partially pay for their Worlds' trip. They were among 11 other teams out of more than 1,000 competing teams that won a partial paid bid to the World Championship.

Congratulations to all the girls along with their coaches who have shown that dedication, teamwork, and commitment will make you soar.

Catch them on ESPN, where they will go head to head with the best of the best in the "Superbowl" of cheerleading.

Top Gun is working hard to earn money to pay for the entire trip. If you would like to help, you can sponsor this athletic and goal-oriented group of girls and help make their dreams come true.
