The Valencia boys volleyball team advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division II quarterfinals Tuesday thanks to a 3-1 victory over El Modena on the road.

The Vikings won by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-12, and their combination of improved passing and aggressive defense helped them close out the Vanguards.

“We stepped up our blocking quite nicely,” said Valencia head coach Mark Knudsen. “We had a lot of blocks tonight. We steadied our passing.”

Valencia’s struggles passing led to a deficit in the first game, and El Modena (19-8) staved off a rally to pick up the win.

The teams traded roles in the second game, as the Vikings (21-11) came out strong and held off El Modena to tie the match. Valencia then won the third game before dominating the fourth and winning the match.

The Vanguards tried to set their outside hitters, but didn’t have much else offensively.

“They ran two setters,” Knudsen said. “They had a really good outside hitter and kind of focused on him. They didn’t go to the middle very often. It’s easy to set the outside because you don’t have to have a perfect pass, and those guys delivered for them.”

Josh Duarte had eight blocks to lead the Vikings, along with seven kills. Daniel Johnson had 15 kills and Broc Oppler had 11, while Souisa had seven kills. Jason Halliday had three aces and Oppler had two.

Valencia will face Royal on Friday at a site to be determined in the CIF-SS Div. II quarterfinals. Royal knocked out San Luis Obispo in another second-round match Tuesday evening.
