This valley has produced some fine programs this decade - a national champion in Valencia softball, two-time state champion Saugus cross country, a state champion in Canyon football, but there is little argument as to what the dominant program has been in this valley.

Valencia boys volleyball has set a standard by winning three CIF-Southern Section division titles, won 90 percent of its matches and been in six division title matches.

Now the Vikings are the No. 1 high school volleyball team in the country, according to sports Web site Rivals.com.

Valencia entered the season with the No. 1 ranking, then lost it after being defeated by Santa Barbara March 8.

Six days later, Valencia avenged the loss with a three-game sweep of the nation's No. 1 Santa Barbara team and would regain its No. 1 ranking in the country.

Santa Barbara is the same squad that defeated Valencia in the CIF-Southern Section Division II semifinals in 2007.

The Vikings could play the Dons two more times this season as Valencia will play in the Santa Barbara Tournament beginning April 17. The next matchup could be in the Division II playoffs with the winner having a good shot at ending up as the No. 1 team in the nation when the final ranking come out.
