Pagans and Nazis

Oh, my, to be an Obama supporter in the Santa Clarita Valley. In reading the Opinion section Friday, May 8, we are hit with a double whammy.

First, Paul Strickland ("Democrats are at it again") insinuates that all who support initiatives to convert from fossil fuels to renewable energy are really pagans who want to regulate America so we can force everyone to worship Mother Earth.

In his analysis of "cap and trade," he writes of his skepticism of global warming. Fine, forget the polar bear. These proposals are not just about environmental issues.

How soon these Republicans forget the two wars we are presently in because of the underlying factor of our dependence on foreign oil.

So it is not just the environment but national security that demands a program to foster alternatives to fossil fuels. What is his idea? (Drill, baby, drill)

The second whammy was William Creitz' letter ("Sound familiar?") that compares Obama supporters to brown shirt Nazis, and of course President Obama is a mesmerizing Hitler.

Sheesh, how do you respond to that?

I know many intelligent and moderate Republicans in this valley, but they are remarkably silent in the public arena.

Instead, all we get are these extreme views accusing Democrats of really being socialists and President Obama of being the anti-Christ.

Republicans should be careful.

Only about one in five Americans describe themselves as Republican. We need a healthy two-party system in this country. If the Republicans don't come back toward the center, they will become irrelevant.

They might go the way of the Whigs and a new alternative to the Democrats will have to emerge.
