Sparks thank SCV

Thank you to the community for your support of our son, Nate Sparks. On July 24, Nate was diagnosed with AML leukemia. His diagnosis shocked us because he has always been a strong natural athlete.

As he prepared to begin his senior year, colleges were recruiting him for his football kicking ability and he was also an excellent high jumper.

Nate endured three rounds of intense chemotherapy, long stints at the hospital and several complications: heart problems, kidney failure and more. He is thin, scarred and has permanent hearing loss, but he is alive!

During the struggle, many angels in our community raised funds, organized bone marrow and blood drives, donated blood and platelets, brought cards and gifts, visited Nate and most importantly, prayed for him.

Canyon High, the football team and boosters, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation and the Patterson family gave continually to Nate.

Others, who we do not even know, assisted us as well.

Our excellent pediatric oncologist, Dr. Storch, and many skilled, caring nurses saved him.

Seven months after his battle began, Nate ended his chemo. He still attends biweekly doctor visits to ensure he is in remission. He sleeps a lot, but attends school, exercises to regain strength and plans attend Brigham Young University in August.

Although his life is returning to normal, he is not the same. He has grown from the experience — as have we, his family.

We realize more than ever that life is a miracle to appreciate every day and never to take for granted. So many good people have not received the gift of survival.

We are truly humbled by the gift of Nate’s health and all that you have done for us.

Thank you all!
