Saddleback of Santa Ana played an efficient game and defeated Saugus 3-1 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II boys volleyball playoffs Friday at Saddleback High School.

The Centurions (20-10) came out flat in the first game and wound up losing 25-23 before winning the second game 25-16.

The third game turned the match when Saddleback won 25-10, and Saugus failed to capitalize on five straight game points in the fourth game and lost 29-27.

“They weren’t that powerful hitting, but they moved the ball around well,” said Saugus head coach Jared Ambrose. “They kept the ball in play until we made mistakes.”

Ryan Mason had 32 assists for Saugus and Sean Picard had 17 kills, while Kyle Eaton had 11. Freshman Matt Coleman was inserted during the third game and provided a spark for the remainder of the match.

Saugus loses Eaton and Mike and Matt Romero to graduation.

“This year, there was not a lot of pressure,” Ambrose said. “Next year, I feel we’re contending for the league title. We’re getting everybody back except for three seniors. I can already plug people in and I think next year we’re going to be an elite program.”
