The West Ranch boys tennis team tied Bonita at La Verne 9-9 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division II postseason, but the Wildcats won on games 82-71.

“They never gave up,” said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker. “We were on top of them the whole match. You constantly felt like this is over, and suddenly it isn’t over.”

Top singles player Jordan Hovis swept his three sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, while the doubles team of Patrick Fuertes and Brandon Lee won two of three sets, including a 6-4 victory in their last set to give the Wildcats (12-3) the win on games.

“They dictated the doubles,” Spiecker said. The only doubles team that did that for us was Patrick and Brandon in the last set.

West Ranch will play in the second round at 3 p.m. Saturday at a site yet to be determined.
