Canyon softball entered Thursday’s Foothill League finale with one goal - to make the playoffs and end the longest postseason draught in the league.

However, West Ranch had other plans.

The Wildcats placed Canyon on the playoff bubble with a 4-2 win at the Hart Complex that leaves the Cowboys wondering if it can get an at-large berth to extend its season.

The game was fueled by a playoff-like atmosphere with screaming fans and a pair of on-edge coaching staffs creating an intense mood.

In the end, the tension reached a high point on a controversial call that helped determine the outcome of the game.

West Ranch took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Cowboys (15-13, 5-5) loaded the bases with no one out, and Shayna Medoff walked third baseman Danielle Sullivan to force home a run.

Hayley Bottino followed with a shot to center field, but Bryanna De La Torre made a juggling catch for the first out of the inning.

Canyon catcher Brittany Williams tagged up and scored what appeared to be the Cowboys’ third run, but West Ranch (13-3, 3-7) appealed, claiming she left the bag early.

The umpires ruled that Williams did not stay on the base long enough and called her out as part of a deflating double play.

Medoff retired McKenna Smith on a fly out to end the game and earn the win.

Offensively, the Wildcats were paced by two hits from Alyssa Hernandez, Breanne Lendman and Michaela Hernandez.
Medoff only allowed four hits in a complete game effort.
