A small grass fire briefly shut down the northbound Interstate 5 near state Route 126 on Wednesday, but firefighters had the blaze under control within minutes.

About 12:35 p.m., flames charred grass alongside the freeway where CalTrans workers were doing roadwork, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. William McCloud.

California Highway Patrol officers closed the northbound I-5 near SR 126 for about five minutes so firefighters could douse the flames.

Though officials initially suspected a CalTrans tractor sparked the grass fire, McCloud said the cause of the blaze was under investigation.
