The student center at College of the Canyons was a busy place April 25 as nearly 3,000 students and parents gathered for the annual Discovering Careers Expo 2009, hosted by the SCV School & Business Alliance.

At this hands-on career-exploration event, students of all ages met with more than 100 company representatives from around the valley.

Attendees learned not only what these representatives do for a living, but also how they got where they are in terms of both education and experience.

The student center was packed for the event, starting from just outside the building where a long row of demo-tables was set up. The hands-on displays continued inside, filling the hallway and lining the walls of the cafeteria.

Accompanied by parents and siblings, students stopped and talked to the company representatives coming from all industry sectors from architecture to orthodontics.

Many students opted to take part in the live demonstrations that were being offered, completing activities that are virtual replicas of what these representatives do on a day-to-day basis.

"This event was awesome," said Anthony Palazzo of PMSM Architects, who had laid out building plans and an assortment of architectural displays. "I had a great time talking to all the students. They are so enthused."

With a representative from 15 industry sectors, students were able to take from the event a diverse and wholesome experience from an entire spectrum of careers.
