The Saugus High School color guard took home its first gold medal at the Southern California Winter Guard Association Championships April 18 in Orange County.

The Saugus High School color guard made history on April 18 by capturing the team's first gold medal at the Southern California Winter Guard Association Championships in Orange County. The Saugus color guard has captured several bronze medals in the past but has never taken home the gold medal until this competition.

The color guard's championship show, titled "That's Life," was performed by team captain Michelle Patterson and the other 19 members of the team.

Saugus competed against 28 color-guard teams and scored an overall high score of 87.9 to win the day.

The band director and team advisor at Saugus High School, Robert Gibson, said he was proud of the team for its gold medal achievement and for how well team members worked together the entire season to perfect this show.

At the conclusion of the marching band and color guard competition season in December, the color-guard teams began competing in weekend Winter Guard competitions, which culminate with the season-ending Association Championship.

The winter guard competition season allows color-guard teams (sometimes referred to as drill or flag teams), which normally perform with high school marching bands, to take center stage on their own, performing a choreographed show to a recorded music track.

The Saugus drill design was composed by Scott Bilbruck and the show design was created by Jennifer Bird.

The team is instructed by Debby Gibson, Jennifer Bird and Lorraine Koghagen. They are supported by the Saugus Band and Color Guard Boosters.
