Experts in environmental careers and on environmental issues attended Rio Vista Elementary School's Environmental Awareness Day last month. Here children learn about orangutans, which are endangered due to the destruction of their environment.

Rio Vista Elementary School students celebrated Earth Day last month with an Environmental Awareness Day that featured workshops, demonstrations from professionals and nature hikes.

"It allows the children to experience things they would not experience within the four walls of their classroom," said Judy Umeck, president of the Saugus Union School District school board.

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita, and Santa Clarita City Councilwoman Marsha McLean were among the officials who attended the day-long event.

On hand were workers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Placerita Canyon Nature Center and other organizations. Careers in environmental-related fields and opportunities for conservation were presented.

The third annual event is a valuable chance to introduce youngsters to environmental issues and career paths before they high the vital high school years, said Salvador Ramirez of the National Hispanic Environmental Council.
