Bus drivers for the Castaic Union School District got a special treat Friday morning when a group of Live Oak Elementary School kids and parents hosted an appreciation breakfast for them.

About 20 student council students from Live Oak, along with a handful of Live Oak parents, spent the morning at the Castaic Union School District bus yard pouring orange juice and handing out breakfast snacks to the district's 13 bus drivers.

"It's just our way of saying thank you for all the hard work," Live Oak parent Denise Wade said.

The morning appreciation coincided with the teacher-staff appreciation celebration this week at Live Oak Elementary School. The event was organized by Wade and co-chair Allison Banry.

Live Oak parents hosted a Western-themed luncheon, treat giveaway and chili cook-off for Live Oak teachers and staff and district administrators, Wade said.

"Live Oak is such a wonderful, warm school," Wade said.

Live Oak's two student council presidents were happy to give back to the bus drivers.

"(For) all that they do, they never really get a thank you," said 11-year-old Brooke Rapko.

Cynthia Lewis, 62, has spent the past 20 years as a bus driver for the Castaic Union School District and finds the job and kids enjoyable, she said.

"It feels good to be appreciated by the people you work with," Lewis said.

Over the past week, about 120 teachers and staff members, ranging from custodians to yard duties, received personalized thank-you gifts. Each gift was presented in a pouch made from 85 pairs of donated jeans from Live Oak families, Wade said.
