More than 200 graduates from The Master's College walked across the stage at College of the Canyons on Friday during the college's 82nd commencement ceremony.

The class of 2009, sporting their caps and gowns, filed in to the sounds of cheering families waving posters and snapping photos.

Many families held balloons, flowers and gifts as others rang cowbells to cheer for students who earned their degrees from the Christian liberal arts college in Placerita Canyon.

Proud father Will Simmons, of Santa Clarita, joined his family in the bleachers to watch daughter Charis Secor receive her bachelor's degree in biblical counseling.

"I'm very proud of my daughter," he said. "She's graduating from a very good college that teaches biblical ethics and teaches you how to work in this world in a very wise and discerning way."

There were 280 students eligible for the graduation ceremony with 245 graduates participating in commencement, said Gay Johnson, assistant registrar at The Master's College.

Graduation brought together students from The Master's Institute, the Master of Arts in biblical counseling, the Master of Arts in biblical studies, and the undergraduate program of The Master's College.

Three students graduated from The Master's Institute, 19 students completed the master's program and 258 undergraduate students getting their degrees, she said.

For the undergraduate students, biblical studies, business and communications are the most popular majors among students, she said.

In his commencement address, Dr. Steve Viars, president of the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, encouraged students to make a difference in the world.

"Your community, wherever God is going to take you next, needs you," said Viars, who also serves as pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Lafayette, Ind.

He also asked students to reflect on their growth since entering The Master's College and to look ahead to the future.
"Now it's time to prove yourself," he said.

Also during the ceremony, The Master's College president Dr. John MacArthur awarded the first President's Award to Rick Dempsey, a 1987 graduate of The Master's College. Dempsey now serves as a senior vice president for Disney.
