An announcement is expected by the end of the week on the hiring of boys and girls basketball coaches at Golden Valley High.

One possible candidate, though he wouldn’t use that term, for the boys job is a very familiar name — Chris Printz.

Printz, the only head varsity boys basketball coach in the school’s history, resigned from the position March 27, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

But his family has since urged him to reconsider, he said.

“The family said, ‘Why aren’t you coaching anymore?’” Printz said. “We’ll see what shakes out.”

Printz said he has not been involved in the interviewing process, but as the school’s co-athletic director he does have knowledge as to what is going on.

He said three candidates have been interviewed for the job, though he was not one of them.

Printz would not go as far as to say that he will return to coach the Grizzlies.

Golden Valley was 27-4 in 2008-09, winning the school’s first-ever team Foothill League title.

The Grizzlies reached the CIF-Southern Section Division III-A semifinals, losing 94-87 to Gahr High.

In four varsity seasons, Printz’s teams went 59-51.

All-SCV Player of the year signs

The Signal’s 2008-09 and Foothill League’s girls basketball player of the year has signed on to play basketball at San Francisco State University.

Saugus High senior guard Nicole Hicks has signed a letter of intent to play for the NCAA Division II program, according to Hicks’ mother Linda.

The Gators finished the 2008-09 season going 14-14 overall.

Hicks scored 19.6 points and averaged 3.1 steals per game this past season.

Warr going back to Division I

College of the Canyons sophomore third baseman Matt Warr has accepted a baseball scholarship from Sacramento State University.

Warr, a 2007 Canyon High graduate, played baseball at Cal State Northridge in 2008, then left CSUN to play for College of the Canyons this season.

In 42 games this season, he is batting .318 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs.

Sacramento State is an NCAA Division I program that plays in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Hornets are 24-21 this season.

Herrick heading back to Ole Miss

It looks like Michael Herrick will finally get to start in Oxford, Miss.

The Valencia High graduate and the state’s all-time prep passing yardage leader transferred to Northern Arizona University from Ole Miss after the 2007 college football season.

Northern Arizona will play Ole Miss in Oxford on Nov. 7.

Herrick figures to be NAU’s starting quarterback this season after passing for 1,043 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games in 2008.

In NAU’s spring game on April 25, Herrick was 10-of-14 for 78 yards and a touchdown pass.

Saugus grad wins pro golf event

Saugus High graduate Ryan Keith won his first-ever professional golf tournament April 26 at Eagle Vines Golf Club.

The 23-year-old won the event in Napa on the Pepsi Tour, a West Coast professional golf tour that will hold more than 120 events in 2009.
