Crime watch: Web tip leads to drug arrest

Technology played a part in helping sheriff's deputies collar a suspected drug dealer.

A 21-year-old Newhall man, whose name was not released, was arrested late Friday afternoon after someone reported, via the SCV Sheriff's Station's Web site, that a suspicious vehicle was parked near
Placerita Canyon Road and 12th Street, according to a Monday sheriff's report.

When deputies from the station's Community Interaction Team responded, they reportedly found a vehicle matching the description.

After conducting a traffic stop, deputies identified three suspected gang members and reportedly found individually packaged baggies of marijuana and methamphetamine in the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested.

The man was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of possession of marijuana for sale, and possession of methamphetamine for sale. He was later released after posting $20,000 bond pending future court proceedings, according to the report.

"This is just the way we drew it up," station Capt. Anthony La Berge said in a statement. "We cannot do it alone. We need the eyes, ears, and involvement of our residents to keep the Santa Clarita Valley safe.

"Those individuals who are considering committing crimes should be aware that our community is very active and involved in crime prevention efforts, and there is a very good chance these criminals will be identified and arrested," Le Berge said. "Many of these anonymous tips are leading us right to these perpetrators."

The investigation is ongoing.
