For the first time in school history, West Ranch High has a No. 1-ranked team.

The Wildcats baseball team was ranked No. 1 in the poll released Monday for CIF-Southern Section Division I.

West Ranch is an area-best 19-4 and 10-1 in the Foothill League, having won 11 of its last 12 games.

As if there's not enough hype on West Ranch, the team is ranked 18th in the state by MaxPreps.com.

The Wildcats have a one-game lead in the Foothill League over Valencia with four league games to play.

It would be the third varsity league title in the school's five-year history.

Boys varsity golf has won back-to-back league titles.
In softball, Hart is No. 2 behind Norco in the Division I poll.

Valencia slid to No. 4.

Valencia volleyball is No. 6 in Division II and Vikings tennis are No. 5 in Division II.

Surprisingly, West Ranch tennis has jumped into the Division II fray, as the Wildcats are No. 9 in the same poll.

But back to baseball.

Being the No. 1 team means that expectations are high for the Wildcats going into the postseason, which is still two weeks away.

We check in with the top competition for the Wildcats in Division I baseball to see the road that lies ahead.

Edison and Mater Dei are still near the top, so these Orange County powerhouses seem to be, along with the Wildcats, the division title favorites.

No. 2 Edison of Huntington Beach
Record: 16-4 overall, 9-2 in the Sunset League
Last game: Friday, 4-3 loss to Marina of Huntington Beach
So here's the thing. All that great news that you just read about West Ranch is diminished by the fact that, though Edison is not No. 1 in its own division, it is No. 3 in the state and No. 4 in the nation according to MaxPreps.com.

Losing to Marina is not a bad thing, either. Marina is No. 4 in the state.

Edison actually beat Marina 2-1 April 29.

Yet the Chargers have lost two of their last three games after starting the season 15-2.

One thing that hasn't changed about Edison, though, is its pitching staff is still stingy.

The Chargers are allowing 1.95 runs per game and scoring 6.75.

No. 3 Mater Dei of Santa Ana
Record: 19-3 overall, 8-3 in the Trinity League
Last game: Saturday, 6-1 win over Santa Margarita
As if Edison wasn't formidable enough in the division, the No. 3 team Mater Dei is No. 1 in the state and No. 2 nationally.

The Monarchs are human, though.

They lost to 9-14 Servite on April 24.

But the Monarchs still pack a punch. According to ocvarsity.com, the team is batting .470 and has a 1.31 ERA.
