A local martial arts guru is teaming up with a child-safety program to help minimize the risk of child abduction.

Gavin Espinosa's ATA Martial Arts will host a Kidz ‘n Power Child Safety workshop for children and parents from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Gavin Espinosa's ATA Martial Arts is located at 25844 Hemingway Avenue in Stevenson Ranch.

"If we think we're the safest city in the nation, we have to think twice, because even the safest cities are not impervious to child abductions," said Espinosa.

Everyone who attends the open house, which is endorsed by amberalert.com, will participate in an instruction of simple breakaway self-defense moves, role-playing to practice what to do in dangerous situations, and child identification.

Espinosa will lead participants through an instructional DVD, created by Kidz' n Power, which shows them the moves. Espinosa is a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, certified in fitness and group-exercise training and was a silver medalist in the 2004 world championships for the American Taekwondo Association.

"I just want to make Santa Clarita a safer city," Espinosa said. "We have the education and knowledge, we just have to partner with the community to get the information out there."

Espinosa has hosted two of the workshops over the past six months for his in-house clients. Parents of those who attended encouraged him to take the workshop to the community, he said. Children from the ages of 3 to 13 years of age have attended.

"It is my intention, being mindful of child safety and being a resident here in Santa Clarita for almost 20 years, that I would (provide) a responsible proactive resolution to this community in bringing about child safety awareness through the Kidz' n Power program," Espinosa said.

Those who attend will also take home a three-disk prevention pack which includes an interactive DVD that discusses internet safety.

A second open house will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gold Medal ATA Martial Arts, located at 29487 The Old Road.
