April is Autism Awareness Month in the city of Santa Clarita.

Everyone can help.

1. Share information about autism with your family, neighbors, etc.

2. Attend the Santa Clarita City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 10, when the council proclaims April as Autism Awareness Month.

3. Buy a children's book that helps explain autism and donate it to your child's school library. Read the book to your child's class or another class. (Book suggestions: "Andy's Yellow Frisbee," "Looking After Louis," "Amazingly Alphie!")

4. Wear an autism awareness ribbon, bracelet or shirt. There are many items available online including eBay.

5. Say "thank you" to your child's therapists, teachers and so on, with a handmade card, a gift card or an autism awareness item.

6. Help your typical child prepare a short story about his/her sibling with autism to read to the class.

7. Send a free Autism Awareness e-card from www.123greetings.com.

8. See if your church, mom's club or other club will let you tell the group about autism.

9. Do a bulletin board with autism information at your workplace.

10. Give a donation to SCAAN to recognize your loved one with autism, and invite your family and friends to join you.

11. Attend a support group meeting in April; bring a friend.

12. For more information on autism visit www.scaan.org.

13. For information on the Yes I Can program at Hart District high schools and junior highs for special needs students with Aspergers or autism, and the students' annual "Summer Meltdown Concert for Austism Awareness and Social Inclusion" coming up Saturday, May 10 at the Golden Valley High amphitheater, visit www.sponsorthemeltdown.com or contact Bret Lieberman, Yes I Can program director, at (661) 298-8140 ext. 1414 or blieber@hartdistrict.org.
