Leftist media bias

A friend on Facebook recently wrote the following in a private message to me: "I agree that the mainstream news media is extremely left on all news reports and such, my question is why? What do they gain by reporting the news the way they do? Can you help me understand why it leans the way it does?"

Of course the media as a whole has never admitted to bias so any answer to this question is of course a hypothesis.

Having said that, trends in campaign contributions made by journalists gives us a pretty good idea of which party they support personally.

An investigation of reporters' campaign contributions by MSNBC Investigative Reporter Bill Dedman found that in 2006 125 of 143 reporters investigated gave to Democrat candidates while only 16 gave to Republicans.

This evidence suggests that the media reports the same way it votes, Democratic. When liberals accuse Fox News of being biased, they are using the example of their own bias to come to this conclusion.

The precipitous fall of the New York Times and the way Fox News seems to be spanking the other cable news shows is evidence that Americans sense the bias as well.

So while mainstream media continue to hide "the other side of the story" from their audiences, the openness of the Internet and the willingness of Fox News to tell the whole story is feeding those that would have otherwise subscribed to mainstream media sources.

So it appears, at least anecdotally, that the mainstream media bias is a product of the ideological group-think that takes place within these media organizations.

From that, one can surmise that what the media has to gain from being biased is the fruition of their particular political wishes.
