The Hart High football team has been getting a lot of attention thanks to last season's CIF-Southern Section Northern Division championship as well as the combo of Brady White and Trent Irwin. Signal file photo

It sort of feels like 2006 all over again.

That was the last time a Santa Clarita Valley football team got this much hype before a season.

That year was Canyon, this year is Hart.

MaxPreps’ West Regional Football Computer Rankings has Hart has the No. 12 team.

The West region is California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Hawaii, Alaska and Montana.

Mighty Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas is the No. 1 team in the region.

Hart and Valencia both face the No. 13 team in the region, Chaminade, this season.

Hart gets Chaminade Sept. 5 and Valencia plays the Eagles the following week.

MaxPreps did another interesting thing in ranking the most dominant Southern Section football teams since 2004.

Valencia, Canyon and Hart all deserved consideration, but just one of those teams made the list — Hart at No. 17.

Canyon certainly has an argument with CIF titles in 2005 and 2006 and a state title in 2006.

Hart has the one CIF title (2013) and an 83-40-1 record in that span.

The top five is as follows: 1. Oaks Christian, 2. Centennial Corona, 3. Long Beach Poly, 4. St. Bonaventure and 5. Mission Viejo.

Back to this season, though.

CalHiSports.com ranked Hart as the No. 16 team in the state.

Four other teams in the new West Valley Division are among the top 50

Five of CalHiSports.com’s top 50 teams in the state live in this new division, with Hart coming in at No. 16.

Vista Murrieta (No. 13), Mission Viejo (No. 20), Upland (No. 23) and Los Alamitos (No. 39) made the top 50.

Calpreps.com has Hart ranked No. 9 in the state.

In the CIF-Southern Section’s preseason poll, released Thursday, Hart was ranked No. 3 in the newly formed West Valley Division.

Valencia was ranked No. 5.

Certainly a lot of these rankings are based off the Indians’ 2013 CIF-Southern Section Northern Division title and the Brady White-Trent Irwin factor.

Hart, though, has seven returning starters from last season and six of the team’s 10 regular season games are against teams ranked in Calpreps’ top 85 of the state, including No. 38 Valencia.
