Hundreds of runners and volunteers will take part in the inaugural Be the Light 5K run/walk sponsored by A Light of Hope Support Center Inc. in Santa Clarita this Saturday.

The event begins with check-in and late registration from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Festivities and announcements will be held from 7:30 to 7:50 p.m., and the 5K run/walk starts at 8 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9 p.m.

Runners and walkers will follow San Francisquito Creek Trail, ending at West Creek Park, where awards will be presented.

The 5K run/walk will follow a loop along both sides of the San Francisquito Creek Trail, between Copper Hill Drive and Decoro Drive.

The course starts where the trail adjoins West Creek Park, at 24247 Village Circle. The route will head south along the trail, cross the Decoro Drive bridge, head north on the trail, and cross the Santa Clara River along Copper Hill Drive.

Participants will then continue south along the San Francisquito Trail before ending with a nighttime finish at West Creek Park.

Competitive runners, novices and walkers are welcome. Participants will receive a goody bag, and medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers.

All participants are asked to bring a small flash light or headlamp to show their support for those battling addiction, and also to safely navigate the paved trail.

One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit A Light of Hope, a Santa Clarita nonprofit addiction support center dedicated to 14- to 26-year-olds and their parents.

“The support for the race has been fantastic so far, with hundreds of participants signed up as well as great volunteers and community partners,” said race organizer Mark Montoya. “We are confident this will be a first-class event.”

“Whether you have been affected by addiction either personally or through family or friends, or just looking to come out and have a great time, this race is for everybody,” Montoya said.

Aside from participating in the race, community members can show their support for the Be the Light 5K in other ways. Supporters can opt to sponsor a participant or donate directly through the Be the Light 5K website.
